This is one my favorite albums ever. The first disc is perfect. There are some hit and miss tracks on the second disc. When I first heard this in the 90’s I was sure that Paul van Dyk would be an iconoclast. His music since this album has been a series of increasingly conventional products.
On each album there has been music I like, but then there are drum rolls, trance horns and other genre tropes that were conventional years ago. Increasingly his only new tracks I can tolerate are the ones with slower B.P.M.’s.
It seems unlikely that Paul van Dyk would be inclined to make an “artist album” at this point. If he did though, it could live up to the remarkable promise he initially showed.
Short of that, Seven Ways deserves a remastered and expanded version. It is more than 20 years old.

‘home’ serves as a pretentious prelude to ‘seven ways’—nothing special.
the album version of ‘seven ways’ starts with 88 ABSOLUTELY USELESS measures where there’s really nothing at all going on except a generic beat. that represents almost half the track. finally the song starts and you have something that resembles the ‘seven ways’ that i’m familiar with from ‘global’. and without any outro beats at all, the song cuts out to ‘heaven’. talk about unbalanced, lol, 88 in and 0 out!
heaven does offer some interest for an album track despite the first 104 measures of uninteresting construction. 104 measures of intro and only 88 measures of actual song. kinda silly if you ask me, especially for an album track!
‘i like it’ is boring and uneventful. sounds kinda like a dub or a track with something essential missing. an especially poor follow up to the previous energetic track.
natascha’s vocals make for a very pleasant listen on ‘come (and get it)’. i could see myself playing this tune in my sets despite a few boring sections.
‘forbidden fruit’, appearing in an almost totally unmixed form, offers the biggest hook thus far. it has a long atmospheric intro with no beat clear til the 140th measure marker. lovely.
i never could get into ‘beautiful place’. i find there’s something unsettling about it. although, at the 200th measure marker he drops 16 measures of an additional melody that undeniably grabs your attention. pitty it doesn’t appear elsewhere in the song.
‘people’ is short and mediocre.
‘the greatness of britain’ offers little interest. it’s ok. same goes for ‘i can’t feel it’.
the album version of ‘words’ is 150 bpm and sounds more like a rave tune than trance. structurally it’s the most unbalanced track yet—192 measure intro and 0 outro. really really senseless. i mean, you’re gonna loose anyone’s attention in all that useless repetition and it’s not like you can mix these tunes without outros, so what’s the point in the mile long intros? i feel like they’re only there to provide filler—to take up space on the album.
the second disc is the real attraction here. starting it off right, we have the best version of ‘seven ways’. this was the whole reason i bought this release actually. as far as i can find this is the only release you’ll find this on. i don’t know why this wasn’t released as a single. it’s a masterpiece.
‘today’ is nice. sounds something akin to atb meets enigma.
next up is another gemm for the ages. masterfully constructed the choice version of ‘words’. any self respecting pvd fan already owns this though.
next is the same version of ‘beautiful place’ that appears on disc 1. only this time it’s unmixed—a valuable inclusion indeed.
the next few tracks don’t interest me. especially that obnoxious remix of words by curve.
however, on ‘beautiful place (just beautiful)’ pvd seems to have taken my afformentioned suggestion and built the song around that 16 measure hook that grabs you at the end of the album version/paradise mix and finally gets it right on this number. i’d consider this the choice mix.
the bt and pvd mix of ‘forbidden fruit’ doesn’t really fancy me, but others i know love it to death. i prefer the Giuseppe Ottaviani remix that was released over a decade later.
all in all, a worthwhile buy if you don’t mind sorting through a lot of mediocre tracks and useless alternative versions of the same tune.
